The Number 666

The number 666 is composed of three parts: ``six hundred,'' ``threescore (sixty),'' and ``six.'' In the Bible, the number ``six'' is man's number, as man was created on the sixth day. So 666 has a component of man in it. The three sixes in 666 represent three men, or the spirits of three persons.

The number 66 is mentioned in connection with Israel going into Egypt, a type for sin:

Ge 46:26 All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls were threescore and six;3

The number 600 is particularly interesting. It is closely connected with the price of the house of God, the Temple, and the Most Holy Place. This is a type of the price of God's body, as the price of salvation, and the price of the church, his body here on earth today:

1Ch 21:22 Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.

23 And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.

24 And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.

25 So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.

This threshingfloor became the site for the Temple of Solomon. It is a type of the church building, the gatheringplace, where the word is preached, sinners are converted, and the sin is separated from the man. This separation is alluded to by the act of threshing, which seperates the wheat from the chaff--the desirable from the undesirable.

The number 600 also appears as the price of something even more precious:

2Ch 3:8 And he made the most holy house, the length whereof was according to the breadth of the house, twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof twenty cubits: and he overlaid it with fine gold, amounting to six hundred talents.

This price is a type of the price of heaven, also God's home, and the price of salvation.

So we see that the number 666 is comprised of man's number, sin's number, and the house of God's number. The importance of this correlation will become more vivid as we continue in this study.
