partially silly question

I realize that this has probably been answered here...and I would 
appreciate being pointed to an idiot FAQ, but....I'm running 1.7.8 on 
a Linux server and thought it would be time to upgrade...maybe just 
to 1.7.9x...anyway I started to compile the code and it wants poll.h 
and my little old linux doesn't have it.  Solution?
