Killing the Server. What is the best signal to send?

What is the best signal to send the server so that it will checkpoint 
before shutting down?  I would like to automate the shutdown.  I have a 
cron task that starts the server at 5:00 pm, but if I have not shut it 
down before that, it all crashes.
