I think the bottom line is often what you want to use the application 
for. When I am in a class, teaching a class, doing a demo or in a 
meeting, I don't want the notes and such scrolling off my screen. That's 
why I bring up the web gateway to begin with. I can understand that in a 
noneducational MUD you might prefer to just see it and have it pass on by.
