Ec 1:1
The preacher shews that all human courses are vain;
Ec 1:1
Jerusalem

The words of the Preacher1, the son of David, king2 in Jerusalem.

Ec 1:2
EMPTINESS-FULNESS

3Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

Ec 1:3
BUSINESS LIFE

What profit4 hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under5 the sun?

Ec 1:4
because the creatures are restless in their courses,
Ec 1:4

One generation6 passeth away, and another generation cometh: but7 the earth abideth for ever.

Ec 1:5
SUN, THE

The sun8 also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth9 to his place where he arose.

Ec 1:6

The wind10 goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

Ec 1:7

All the rivers run11 into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again12.

Ec 1:8
EMPTINESS-FULNESS

All things are full13 of labour; man14 cannot utter it: the eye15 is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

Ec 1:9
they bring forth nothing new, and all old things are forgotten;
Ec 1:9

The thing that hath16 been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there17 is no new thing under the sun.

Ec 1:10

Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath18 been already of old time, which was before us.

Ec 1:11

There is19 no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

Ec 1:12
and because he has found it so in the studies of wisdom.
Ec 1:12
Jerusalem

20I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

Ec 1:13
REST-UNREST
WISDOM-FOLLY

And I gave21 my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore22 travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised23 therewith.

Ec 1:14
BUSINESS LIFE

24I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

Ec 1:15

That which is crooked25 cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting26 cannot be numbered.

Ec 1:16
KNOWLEDGE-IGNORANCE
Jerusalem

I communed27 with mine own heart, saying, Lo,28 I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of29 wisdom and knowledge.

Ec 1:17

And I gave30 my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived31 that this also is vexation of spirit.

Ec 1:18
KNOWLEDGE-IGNORANCE

For in32 much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
