Sarai, being barren, gives Hagar to Abram.
Ge 16:1
HAGAR

Now Sarai Abram's wife bare1 him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian2, whose name3 was Hagar4.

SARAH OR SARAI

And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD5 hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children6 by her. And Abram hearkened7 to the voice of Sarai.

And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had8 dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave9 her to her husband Abram to be his10 wife.

Hagar, being afflicted for despising her mistress, runs away.
Ge 16:4

And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress11 was despised in her eyes.

But Abram14 said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in15 thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee16. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled17 from her face.

Ge 16:7
An angel commands her to return and submit herself, promises her a numerous posterity, and shows their character and condition.

And the angel of the LORD found18 her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain19 in the way to Shur20.

And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid21, whence22 camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee23 from the face of my mistress Sarai.

Ge 16:9

And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit24 thyself under her hands.

Ge 16:10

And the angel25 of the LORD said unto her, I will26 multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.

And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt27 bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael28; because the LORD hath29 heard thy affliction.

Ge 16:12

And he will be a30 wild31 man; his hand32 will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall33 dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

Ge 16:13
Hagar names the place, and returns to Sarai.
Ge 16:13

And she called34 the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou35 God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that36 seeth me?

Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi37; behold, it is between Kadesh38 and Bered.

Ishmael is born.

And Hagar39 bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael40.
