Ge 40:1
The chief butler and baker of Pharaoh being imprisoned, Joseph is charged with them.
Ge 40:1
ARTS AND CRAFTS
BUTLERS
Egypt

And it came1 to pass after these things, that the butler2 of the king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of Egypt.

Ge 40:2

And Pharaoh was wroth3 against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers4, and against the chief of the bakers.

Ge 40:3
LIBERTY-BONDAGE

And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place5 where Joseph was bound6.

Ge 40:4
JOSEPH

And the captain7 of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them: and they continued a season8 in ward.

Ge 40:5
He interprets their dreams.
Ge 40:5
DREAMS
Egypt

And they9 dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, which were bound in the prison.

Ge 40:6

And Joseph came in unto them in the morning, and looked upon them, and, behold,10 they were sad.

Ge 40:7

And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in the ward of his lord's house, saying, Wherefore11 look ye so sadly to day12?

Ge 40:8

And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not13 interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you.

Ge 40:9

And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine14 was before me;

Ge 40:10

And in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded15, and her blossoms16 shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes:

Ge 40:11
CUPS

And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand: and I took17 the grapes, and pressed18 them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand19.

Ge 40:12
DREAMS

And Joseph said unto him, This20 is the interpretation of it: The three21 branches are three days:

Ge 40:13

Yet within22 three days shall23 Pharaoh lift up thine head24, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler.

Ge 40:14

But think on me25 when it shall be well with thee, and shew26 kindness, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house:

Ge 40:15
CANAAN, LAND OF
HEBREWS, THE JEWISH PEOPLE, SO CALLED
JUSTICE-INJUSTICE

For indeed I was stolen27 away out of the land of the Hebrews28: and here also have I done29 nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.

Ge 40:16
BASKETS

When the chief30 baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, I had three white baskets31 on my head:

Ge 40:17

And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bakemeats32 for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head.

Ge 40:18

33And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation thereof: The three baskets are three days:

Ge 40:19

Yet within34 three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee,35 and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds36 shall eat thy flesh from off thee.

Ge 40:20
They are accomplished according to his interpretation.
Ge 40:20
SOCIAL LIFE

And it came to pass the third day37, which was Pharaoh's birthday38, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up39 the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.

Ge 40:21

And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup40 into Pharaoh's hand:

Ge 40:22
NATION, THE

But he hanged41 the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.

Ge 40:23
The ingratitude of the butler, in forgetting Joseph.
Ge 40:23
GRATITUDE-INGRATITUDE

Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him42.
