There was a man in the land of Uz1, whose name was Job3; and that man was perfect4 and upright, and one5 that feared God, and eschewed evil.

Job 1:2

And there were born unto him seven sons6 and three daughters.

His substance7 also was seven8 thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household9; so that this man was the greatest10 of all the men11 of the east12.

Job 1:4

And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called13 for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified14 them, and rose up15 early in the morning, and offered16 burnt offerings according17 to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be18 that my sons have sinned, and cursed19 God in their hearts20. Thus21 did Job continually22.

Satan, appearing before God, by calumniation obtains leave to afflict Job.

Now23 there was a day when the sons24 of God came to25 present themselves before the LORD, and Satan26 came also27 among them28.

And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence29 comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going30 to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered31 my servant32 Job, that there is none33 like him in the earth, a perfect34 and an upright35 man, one36 that feareth God, and escheweth37 evil?

Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job38 fear God for nought?

Hast not thou made an hedge39 about40 him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed41 the work of his hands, and his substance42 is increased in the land.

But put43 forth thine hand now, and touch44 all that he hath, and he will curse thee45 to thy face.

And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold,46 all that he hath is in thy power47; only48 upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan49 went forth from the presence of the LORD.

And there came a messenger51 unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:

And the Sabeans52 fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only53 am escaped alone to tell thee.

While he was yet speaking, there came54 also another, and said, The fire of God55 is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

Job 1:17

While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans56 made out three bands, and fell57 upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

While he was yet speaking, there came58 also another, and said, Thy sons59 and thy daughters were eating60 and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

And, behold, there came a great61 wind from62 the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead63; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

And said, Naked came66 I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave67, and the LORD hath taken away68; blessed69 be the name of the LORD.

Job 1:22

In all this70 Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly71.
