¶ The proverbs¹ of Solomon. A wise² son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

¶ Treasures³ of wickedness profit nothing: but⁴ righteousness delivereth from death.

The LORD will⁵ not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but⁶ he casteth away the substance of the wicked⁷.

¶ He becometh⁸ poor that dealeth with a slack hand⁹: but¹⁰ the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

¶ He that gathereth¹¹ in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son¹² that causeth shame.

¶ Blessings¹³ are upon the head of the just: but violence¹⁴ covereth the mouth of the wicked.

¶ The memory¹⁵ of the just is blessed: but the name¹⁶ of the wicked shall rot.

¶ The wise¹⁷ in heart will receive commandments: but¹⁸ a prating fool¹⁹ shall fall²⁰.

¶ He that walketh²¹ uprightly walketh surely: but²² he that perverteth his ways shall be known.

¶ He that²³ winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but²⁴ a prating fool shall fall²⁵.

¶ The mouth of a²⁶ righteous man is a well of life: but²⁷ violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

¶ Hatred²⁸ stirreth up strifes: but love²⁹ covereth all sins.

¶ In the lips³⁰ of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod³¹ is for the back of him that is void of understanding³².

¶ Wise men lay³³ up knowledge: but the mouth³⁴ of the foolish is near destruction.

¶ The rich³⁵ man's wealth is his strong city: the destruction³⁶ of the poor is their poverty.

¶ The labour³⁷ of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit³⁸ of the wicked to sin.

¶ He is in the way³⁹ of life that keepeth instruction: but he that⁴⁰ refuseth reproof erreth⁴¹.

¶ He that hideth⁴² hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth⁴³ a slander, is a fool.

¶ In the multitude⁴⁴ of words there wanteth not sin: but⁴⁵ he that refraineth his lips is wise.

¶ The tongue⁴⁶ of the just is as choice silver: the heart⁴⁷ of the wicked is little worth.

The lips of the righteous feed⁴⁸ many: but fools⁴⁹ die for want of wisdom⁵⁰.

¶ The blessing of the LORD, it⁵¹ maketh rich, and he⁵² addeth no sorrow with it.

¶⁵³It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.

¶ The fear⁵⁴ of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire⁵⁵ of the righteous shall be granted.

As the whirlwind⁵⁶ passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an⁵⁷ everlasting foundation.

¶ As vinegar⁵⁸ to the teeth, and as smoke⁵⁹ to the eyes, so⁶⁰ is the sluggard to them that send him.

¶ The fear⁶¹ of the LORD prolongeth⁶² days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

The hope⁶³ of the righteous shall be gladness: but⁶⁴ the expectation of the wicked shall perish.

¶ The way⁶⁵ of the LORD is strength to the upright: but⁶⁶ destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

¶ The righteous shall never⁶⁷ be removed: but the wicked⁶⁸ shall not inhabit the earth.

¶ The mouth⁶⁹ of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward⁷⁰ tongue shall be cut out.

The lips of the righteous know⁷¹ what is acceptable: but⁷² the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness⁷³.
