¶ To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil. We have heard² with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times³ of old.

How thou didst drive out⁴ the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict⁵ the people, and cast them out.

For⁶ they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right⁷ hand, and thine arm, and the light⁸ of thy countenance, because⁹ thou hadst a favour unto them.

Thou art my King¹⁰, O God: command¹¹ deliverances for Jacob.

Through thee¹² will we push¹³ down our enemies: through thy name will we tread¹⁴ them under that rise up against us.

¹⁵For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.

But¹⁶ thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them¹⁷ to shame that hated us.

In God¹⁸ we boast all the day long, and praise¹⁹ thy name for ever. Selah.

¶²⁰But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.

¶ Thou²¹ makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil²² for themselves.

Thou hast given²³ us like sheep appointed for meat²⁴; and hast scattered²⁵ us among the heathen.

Thou sellest²⁶ thy people for nought²⁷, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.

Thou makest²⁸ us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn²⁹ and a derision to them that are round about us.

Thou makest us a byword³⁰ among the heathen, a shaking³¹ of the head among the people.

My confusion³² is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered³³ me,

For the³⁴ voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy³⁵ and avenger.

¶ All this³⁶ is come upon us; yet³⁷ have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt³⁸ falsely in thy covenant.

Our heart³⁹ is not turned back, neither have⁴⁰ our steps⁴¹ declined from thy way;

Though⁴² thou hast sore broken us in the⁴³ place of dragons, and covered us with the⁴⁴ shadow of death.

¶ If we⁴⁵ have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched⁴⁶ out our hands to a strange god;

Shall⁴⁷ not God search this out? for he knoweth⁴⁸ the secrets of the heart.

Yea,⁴⁹ for thy sake are we killed⁵⁰ all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

Awake⁵¹, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast⁵² us not off for ever.

Wherefore⁵³ hidest thou thy face, and forgettest⁵⁴ our affliction and our oppression?

⁵⁵For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.

Arise for our help⁵⁶, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.
