¶ To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim, A Psalm² of David. Save me, O God; for the waters³ are come in unto my soul.

I sink⁴ in deep mire⁵, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods⁶ overflow me.

I am⁷ weary of my crying: my throat⁸ is dried: mine⁹ eyes fail while I wait¹⁰ for my God.

They that hate¹¹ me without a cause are more than¹² the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being¹³ mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I¹⁴ restored that which I took not away.

O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins¹⁵ are not hid¹⁶ from thee.

Let not¹⁷ them that wait on thee, O Lord GOD of hosts, be ashamed for my sake: let not those that seek thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel¹⁸.

Because¹⁹ for thy sake I have borne reproach; shame²⁰ hath covered my face.

I am become²¹ a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien²² unto my mother's children.

For the zeal²³ of thine house hath eaten me up; and the²⁴ reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

¶²⁵When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.

I made²⁶ sackcloth also my garment; and I became²⁷ a proverb to them.

They²⁸ that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was²⁹ the song of the drunkards³⁰.

¶ But as for me, my prayer³¹ is unto thee, O LORD, in an³² acceptable time: O God, in the³³ multitude of thy mercy hear me, in the truth of thy salvation.

Deliver³⁴ me out of the mire, and let me³⁵ not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of³⁶ the deep waters.

Let not the waterflood³⁷ overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and let not the pit³⁸ shut her mouth upon me.

Hear me, O LORD; for thy³⁹ lovingkindness is good: turn⁴⁰ unto me according⁴¹ to the multitude of thy tender mercies.

And hide⁴² not thy face from thy servant; for I am⁴³ in trouble: hear me speedily⁴⁴.

Draw⁴⁵ nigh unto my soul, and redeem⁴⁶ it: deliver me because⁴⁷ of mine enemies.

Thou hast known my reproach⁴⁸, and my shame, and my dishonour⁴⁹: mine⁵⁰ adversaries are all before thee.

¶ Reproach⁵¹ hath broken my heart; and I am⁵² full of heaviness: and I looked⁵³ for some to take pity⁵⁴, but there was none; and for comforters⁵⁵, but I found none.

They gave me also gall for my meat⁵⁶; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar⁵⁷ to drink.

¶ Let their table⁵⁸ become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap⁵⁹.

Let their eyes⁶⁰ be darkened, that they see not; and make their⁶¹ loins continually to shake.

Pour⁶² out thine indignation upon them, and let thy wrathful anger take⁶³ hold of them.

Let their⁶⁴ habitation⁶⁵ be desolate; and let none dwell⁶⁶ in their tents.

For⁶⁷ they persecute him whom⁶⁸ thou hast smitten; and they talk⁶⁹ to the grief of those⁷⁰ whom thou hast wounded.

Add⁷¹ iniquity⁷² unto their iniquity: and let them⁷³ not come into thy righteousness.

Let them be blotted⁷⁴ out of the book of the living, and not be written⁷⁵ with the righteous.

But I am poor⁷⁶ and sorrowful: let thy⁷⁷ salvation, O God, set me up on high.

¶ I will⁷⁸ praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify⁷⁹ him with thanksgiving.

This also shall⁸⁰ please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs.

The humble⁸¹ shall see this, and be glad: and your heart⁸² shall live that seek God.

For the LORD⁸³ heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners⁸⁴.

Let⁸⁵ the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth⁸⁶ therein.

For God⁸⁷ will save Zion, and will build⁸⁸ the cities of Judah: that they may dwell there, and have it in possession.

The seed⁸⁹ also of his servants shall inherit it: and they⁹⁰ that love his name shall dwell therein.
